In our 3rd year of study you will develop your aural, harmonic and rhythmic sense through the study of jazz standards, improvisation and transcription. Most sessions involve playing as an ensemble, guided by aural skill and academic knowledge.

Focus on ear training and developing jazz improvisation, applying theoretical understanding to practical situations. We will learn and study jazz standards and unusual repertoire. This is musicianship training at a high level. Assessment for entry to this course can be arranged applying to music@citylit.ac.uk.

Our sessions involve playing as an ensemble. New students who wish to join this 3rd term are welcome to apply to music@citylit.ac.uk.

With guided listening to music forms, and singing, you will study time, form, root movement and harmonic progression, chord types, intervals, scales and modes. Enjoy playing and improvising on familiar and new jazz repertoire in a mixed ensemble. For players with substantial experience of jazz playing, ear training techniques and harmony study. Tunes will be announced in advance of the course. Rhythm section places are limited so please check vacancies with the music department before you enrol.

If you have pop piano training or equivalent keyboard harmony skill, come and tackle the easier end of the jazz piano repertoire. The focus is on jazz harmony and chord voicing, interpretation of a lead sheet and good timing. You'll need to play piano at grade 5 or above. Continues to Jazz piano 2 next term.

'Train the Trainer' is a practical 2 day course designed to help you gain ideas for effective facilitation and managing groups. It is suitable if you are thinking of becoming a trainer and want to gain confidence in planning and facilitating the training, or if you are an experienced trainer and want to refresh your practice. You will leave with some tools and techniques that will ensure your training is engaging and productive for your learners. On day 2 you will have the opportunity to deliver a short micro-training or interactive presentation. You are required to attend both days of this course.
