Skills for Life

Develop the skills you need to participate fully in modern life, make progress at work and express yourself with confidence.

Whether you are a cleaner or a junior manager, office or construction worker, beginner or advanced level, our courses will help you develop the most in-demand workplace skills and at same time improve your general communication, English, ESOL, Data Literacy, Maths and Digital Skills. Our courses will also improve your skills and competences for life outside work from going to the doctors and filling out forms to talking about politics and discussing art.

Inside and outside work, in all types of jobs, at all levels, adults need to be problem-solvers, analysers, decision-makers, team-players, to see the bigger picture and be detail-oriented.     Do you want to stop translating from the your first language? Do you want your English to be more automatic and fluent? On this course, the emphasis is on thinking in English. In each class, you will have a problem, a dilemma, a puzzle or a challenging issue to solve, address or debate. You will need to learn to read or listen between the lines, understand implications and indirect English. You will learn how to analyse text or talks and make decisions or judgements about what has happened and why. You will need to give reasons for your answers, solutions, comments and learn to express yourself in detail so other people can understand you. You will learn about how to speak to the point. These discussions and opinion-giving will improve your vocabulary, your pronunciation and your communication skills and help you think in and with English.

  2. Business Administration (with digital skills): English communication skills for administrators and office workers (level 1-2)

    Do you need to develop your English skills for working in an office and communicating effectively as an administrator? This course will help you become a confident, flexible and successful communicator in writing, face-to-face, on the phone and digitally such as via emails and cloud-based software. You will work on the correct language for written documents and spoken interactions to colleagues, customers, in meetings and answering the phone. You will focus on different levels of formal and informal communication and how to speak and write clearly and concisely, with appropriate tone e.g. in emails and letters on a PC. You will also work on how to lay out key documents, spell well and punctuate correctly. By the end of this course, you will confident you can work successfully in an office environment.

  3. Communication skills: working with people (ESOL entry 3- level 1)

    Do you need to talk to members of the public at work - by phone, face-to-face, online? Do you have to understand your work colleagues? Does your supervisor send you emails you need to reply to? This course will help you become a good communicator at work mainly when speaking and listening but also when sending text messages and emails. You will practise how to interact and engage with customers, how to be polite, how to sell things, talk over the phone at call centres, take messages and talk at the same time, make small talk with work colleagues and write formal emails and polite text messages to your manager.

    Are you already a competent administrator, who is now looking to take on more responsibility and take your skills to the next level? Then this course will help you. On this course, you will develop your communication skills so you can become a confident lead administrator in any business environment both in relation to customers, colleagues and managers. You will work on communication skills in writing, speech (face-to-face and on the phone) and across digital platforms. You will work on producing documents such as reports, proposal and finance documents to a high standard, as well as meeting agendas, minutes and action plans. You will also work on communication skills within meetings and how to manage and coach direct reports.   5. A mile in my shoes: how to tell a story (level 1-2)

    “I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes.....” What would it feel like for someone else to walk in your shoes so that just for that one moment they could be you? This course will help you find out. On this course you will work on creating and telling your own digital story. You will turn an event in your life into a story which you will record digitally. You will then invite other people to wear your shoes (literally), walk and listen to your story. This will be part of a small exhibition within City Lit! This is a unique opportunity to develop your English – your speaking, listening, vocabulary, range of expression, grammar and overall communication skill - as well as learn how to create an engaging and impacting story.

  7. Develop your writing and language skills (level 1-level 2)

    Have you been learning English for a long time but your writing just doesn’t seem to be improving? Are you quite a fluent speaker but find formal speaking difficult? Do you feel ‘stuck’. This course will release you! You will focus on how to improve the structure of your writing both the whole text, paragraphs and sentences. You will work on understanding the grammar of the language, and the skills you learn to develop your writing will help you improve your more formal speaking whether this is for job interviews, meetings at work or giving presentations. This course is ideal if you have been living in the UK for several years, feel quite comfortable in speaking English as a second language, but lack confidence in your literacy skills.

  8. Grammar in practice: beginners (entry 1 -2)

    Do you need help with your grammar? Do you want to know more about verb tenses? Do you want to ask questions with good pronunciation and correct grammar? On this course, you will learn all the essential grammar to help you speak and write well. You will focus on when to use present simple, present continuous and past simple. You will practise when to use 'do', 'does', 'is', 'are' and 'did' in questions and how to say these words. By the end of the course you will have a strong foundation for your English learning.
