Location on this date: Keeley Street
Tutors: Chris HoughWhile an exhibition has a finite lifespan, this is not true of accompanying publications. The exhibition website can provide opportunities for wider exposure, globally and without time limits. Further, as recent times have demonstrated, when galleries and museums have been forced to engage via online platforms, a well-designed website can augment (or replace) the physical show in important ways: accessibility, interactivity, forums, evolution over time – features that can be particularly relevant to practitioners engaged in research or community participation.
Artists are finding ways to multiply the forms of communication on websites beyond simply presenting work that could be encountered in other contexts, and to make the online medium (and media) central to their practices. This workshop looks at the considerations involved in putting art practice online as a means of social discourse at one end and as a commercial enterprise on the other. In addition to considering how to provide continuity, afterlife and legacy for conventional gallery shows, it also explores the possibility inherent in a diversity of interactions, and considers whether online material influences the way we perceive (or preconceive) a gallery show, and if so how. In examining these questions, the workshop will consider sites of different scope and scale, from small websites for a solo practice or show to group sites, or sites that connect to a commercial gallery or institution’s own website, and the website as a location for sales.
Please note that while aspects such as the structure of information and the design of a site will be considered, this workshop is not intended as website design or software training. Its focus is on helping participants to understand the capabilities of the website as a tool for creative practitioners engaged in public dissemination of their practice.Full fee £69.00
