Certaines de ses chansons sont restées des succès populaires intemporels (Douce France, La Mer, Ménimontant), au-delà même du monde Francophone.

Cultivant une image de poète maudit (même s’il ne se trouve pas en marge du système), il composera de nombreuses chansons dont les textes, très souvent provocateurs et à double-sens, lui valent de nombreuses polémiques. Il est aussi célèbre pour avoir été un auteur prolifique pour d’autres artistes et en particulier, des femmes (Brigitte Bardot, Jane Birkin, Catherine Deneuve, Isabelle Adjani…).
