This improvers course will focus on expanding existing knowledge of ballet technique and vocabulary and is designed to enable you to learn and execute more varied and complex movement sequences. There is an emphasis on delivering ballet technique to facilitate healthy joints, flexibility, movement quality and core strength.
Silver Swans® classes have been specifically designed for the over-55s and the improvers course is suitable for older leaners with at least 1 year of foundation ballet or Silver Swans experience.

What is the course about?

Our Silver Swans improvers classes will continue to work on achieving greater balance, strength and flexibility as well as increasing technical skills in order to achieve more complex movement sequences and choreography. Suitable for learners with at least 1 year of Foundation ballet or Silver Swans experience.

What will we cover?

Silver Swans classes will focus on building the technique and movement vocabulary necessary to develop the expression, musicality and performance skills required to perform these adaptations. Repertoire includes Swan Lake, Coppelia, La Bayadere & Sleeping Beauty Flower Fairies.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Recognise a wider range of movement
Use greater flexibility, co-ordination and balance
Demonstrate increased stamina and control of movement
Perform a set dance sequence with more ease and confidence.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Silver Swans ballet class improvers is suitable for older leaners 55+ with at least 1 year of foundation ballet or Silver Swans experience.

In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Follow spoken instructions
• Use numbers to recognise rhythms within dance.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Group work in a well equipped, modern sprung floor studio with music. It is essential to be ready to start on time.

As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You
are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please wear clothing that does not restrict your movement and allows you to adapt to changes in your body temperature. Tights, leotards or clothing that does not restrict movement will allow your tutor to see your work more clearly. Ballet shoes either canvas or leather with elastics. Jock straps are recommended for the men. Students to tie their hair back if it is long for their own safety and comfort. No jewellery to be worn during class.

Kate Scott

Kate began her dance training aged 5 and graduated from Rambert School. She went on to have an eclectic career as a freelance ballet and contemporary dancer performing in operas, contemporary dance projects, music videos and commercials, working with Ashely Page, Amir Hosseinpour and Wayne McGregor. Kate began her teaching career in 2014 and is a specialist in adult ballet, Elders Ballet; she teaches the Silver Swans ballet classes at City Lit. As well as teaching Dance GCSE, she has also enjoyed working with inclusive dance groups. Kate joined City Lit in 2018 and really enjoys sharing her passion and knowledge of this historic and artful dance genre. She is particularly keen on teaching adults and beginners as the resulting pride and sense of accomplishment from her students make all the hard work enjoyable and worthwhile. Kate has an interest in Pilates and Body Psychotherapy and is a certified BioDynamic massage therapist. One of her ambtions is to have four Jack Russell Terrier, two donkeys and a menagerie of farm animals. She enjoys walking in the countryside and is currently studying for some more ballet teaching qualifications.
