Intended for learners who have studied Irish for approximately a year and a half, or who have an equivalent level, students will explore a variety of topics, using a variety of tenses, with a continuing emphasis on the spoken language.

Can you have short conversations in English, and read and write simple emails, but want to do more? This course will help you talk, read and write about more interesting subjects and make fewer mistakes so people can understand you, you can understand them and you can read and write important messages, emails, forms and news stories. You will improve your vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. By the end of this three-term programme you will able to interact confidently with English speakers in your daily life. Explore classic texts of 19th century French and Russian literature, discussing literary style, themes, and contexts as a way of developing and sharing responses to celebrated European writing. Among the French writers examined will be Stendhal, Baudelaire, Flaubert and Rimbaud, with our Russians including Pushkin, Lemontov, and Tolstoy.

This course offers a broad survey of German history from the sealing of the country’s division by the Berlin Wall to its unforeseen reunification in 1989-90 and its aftermath.

Over the past five hundred years in the West belief in God has declined. This course will examine why this has happened and consider the meaning and significance of what has taken place.

For advanced learners (Citylit advanced level) of Mandarin Chinese to improve their speaking, listening and command of the Chinese language at a higher level (equivalent to HSK-4).







Suitable if you have studied Chinese part-time for at least 5-6 years/ full-time for more than two years and have been self-learning and using Chinese occasionally in life/work or if you have passed HSK level-3 or equivalent (1500 vocabulary items or more).Students should be able to read Chinese characters.

Continue improving your elementary Spanish on this communicative course, taught in Spanish with the emphasis on speaking and listening. Suitable if you have completed 'Spanish 2 lower: module 2' or equivalent. Based on units 11-15 of 'Ele Actual A2 (libro del alumno)' and exercise book (SM Publishers).

This class explores the work of Bob Dylan, examining his song writing, musical style, and persona in the context of American cultural, political, and musical history, exploring how Dylan engages with American culture through his absorption and reworking of multifarious aspects of both historical and modern Americana.

How do you keep on top of your notes, to do list, tasks, meetings and ideas? Are you still using paper notebooks and post-it notes? Is there too much in your head cluttering your mind? This course will show how to use the digital notebook, OneNote, in conjunction with Outlook, and integrate both apps with OneDrive so you become an organised and self-managing administrator. You will learn how to take notes at any time and arrange them so you can always find what you are looking for. You will practise how to integrate Outlook and OneNote so you can organise meetings and share meeting notes and minutes easily and quickly, record the meetings, relate sections of the audio to tasks and action points for yourself and others, create to do lists, and link these tasks to tasks and emails in Outlook . In addition you will learn other useful tips on how to make the most of OneNote, for example to make calculations, translate text and edit text inside images. By the end of the course you will have clear idea of how to be organised digitally and have developed the necessary skills to put your ideas into practice.

What’s the unique appeal of historical fiction? Why do we read it, and what are we looking for? This course investigates historical fiction written in the twenty-first century and how it reimagines the past for us as contemporary readers. Reading novels and short stories set in the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, we’ll explore historical fiction’s strategies, challenges and pleasures: how it can bring unknown stories into view and rewrite what we think we know. Includes Francis Spufford's Golden Hill (2016), Emma Donoghue's The Woman who Gave Birth to Rabbits (2002) and Maggie O'Farrell's Hamnet (2020).
