If you are interested in illustration and would like to explore the subject further, this course will show you a range of new and exciting approaches. You will learn many new techniques, whether you are a complete beginner or someone who would like to refresh their approach. On this practical course you’ll learn the practicalities of what it is to be an illustrator. This is not a computer-based course but there is help and advice with software for those who wish to use it.

City Lit contemporary collage projects 2 continues with a set of collage and mixed media projects designed to experiment with and examine the interplay between the two and three dimensions. You will work with a wide range of materials, on and off the wall, extending our pictorial practice into the realm of collage, painting, drawing, assemblage, bricolage, decoupage, photomontage, small scale constructions, printing and text within the context of mixed media. Note* the course is designed in a way to enable students to either complete all three courses over the year or, come in at any stage in no particular order.

This course introduces contemporary contexts for life painting using acrylic paints to explore different creative approaches using the imagination alongside observation of the model. Suitable for all levels but some previous life drawing experience an advantage.

Storyboarding (telling a story through a sequence of images) is an essential skill for children’s book creators, illustrators, and moving-image practitioners. Not only do drawings need to communicate character, setting and action, but these must be consistent across the whole sequence. Quite a tricky skill to master, but one that will enable creators to get ‘buy in’ from editors and art directors at the early stages of a project.

Workshops tend to have a practical focus, with little or no conceptual or contextual elements, although this varies by course.

This course will teach you the skills you need to paint naturalistic skin tones when working from life which will make your figure and portrait paintings more convincing.

Developing illustration techniques builds on from the introduction to illustration course and enables you to expand your illustration skills. You will experiment with a variety of different projects and work towards finding your own unique voice and style within illustration. There will be an exploration into a wide range of different media, materials, processes and techniques.
