Essential Skills Courses at City Lit

Do you want to develop your English, ESOL, Maths or Digital Skills? Do you need to improve these skills to make progress at work, express yourself fully and participate in modern life? Whether English is your first or second language, you haven’t studied maths since school or you need to become confident on the computer, we can help you.

You can study on a wide range of courses from beginner to advanced and learn all the skills you need to do well at work, communicate effectively and become an active citizen. All our classes are taught by highly qualified tutors passionate about their subject.

Most of our courses are FREE if you are on a low income or claiming benefits. You will also usually need to do a pre-course assessment.

  3. Develop your confidence in writing: sentence formation, grammar and punctuation in everyday writing (level 1-2)

    Would you like to be more confident in the way you form sentences, understand grammar and use punctuation in your writing? It can be tempting to just stick a comma in a sentence, avoid adverbs and crumble when it comes to knowing what a clause is, but it doesn’t have to be that way. This course will help you be more secure in your professional, academic or creative writing skills and help you improve some of your weak areas around forming and punctuating sentences with appropriate grammatical form. You will develop your confidence in the most essential areas of writing such as punctuation, word types, sentence structures, writing paragraphs, active and passive voice, and proofreading.

    Do you want to improve your pronunciation, learn more about how you sound when you speak English and develop your speaking? A podcast is a digital recording which can be used in a very practical way to help develop your English. On this course, you will discover how to make a podcast to record yourself, edit and upload your files as well as what to say and how to say it. You will be able to practise speaking on your own and interviewing others as well as learn how to prepare what to say and how to say it. Podcasting is a fantastic way of improving your pronunciation, your vocabulary, your spoken accuracy, and your fluency.

    This short course is to make sure you are ready for the full GCSE Maths Foundation programme (AC201/AC205) and to ensure you know what to expect from the full qualification, its content and the commitment required for success in terms of time investment, dedication, interest and ability. GCSE Maths is a qualification which show employers and universities that you have a good level of maths as well as effective concentration and study skills. This pre-intermediate course will help you practise your speaking, listening, reading and writing so you can understand people better, talk about most daily topics, read a simple news story and write a long email or letter.   14. Becoming data literate: making calculations, using percentages, fractions and averages (level 1-2)

    Understanding data, producing it and making decisions based on it are now essential skills for everyone both inside and outside work. Most of us are doing this every day without realising. This course will help you understand and interpret data such as "people make between 1 to 18 calculations each day, with a mean of 3." You will focus on what data is, why it is important, what to use it for. You will learn about different types of calculations, how to use measurements accurately plusidentifying and presenting data patterns. By the end of the course you will have developed the key mathematical, numerical and analytical skills you need to use and make sense of important data at work, in the news and in your daily life. Please note, this course is for students who are around pre-GCSE level or who have gained maths qualifications but haven't used maths for a long time.
