What is the course about?

This course encourages you to speak French more freely and confidently in a wide range of situations. Through regular practice, you will develop your listening skills, strengthen your confidence, and deepen your knowledge of French across both personal and social contexts.

You will take part in activities such as sharing personal experiences (e.g. talking about your background, daily life, or opinions), discussing social topics (e.g. work, culture, or current issues), and listening to authentic spoken French (e.g. interviews, conversations, or short reports) before responding and exchanging ideas with others.

What will we cover?

Topics covered
Learners will explore themes related to emotions, love, and relationships, as well as environmental issues and sustainability.

Language focus
The course develops learners’ accuracy and confidence through work on the agreement of past participles, the use of expressions to summarise information and ideas, and the use of indefinite pronouns to communicate more precisely.

Cultural content
Cultural study includes extracts from works by Boris Vian, offering insight into emotion and creativity in French literature, and an exploration of land art, examining the relationship between art and the natural environment.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

  • Report back on events clearly and accurately
(e.g. Elle nous a expliqué que la réunion avait été annulée à la dernière minute.)

  • Talk about relationships between generations with nuance
(e.g. Les relations entre les parents et les enfants ont beaucoup évolué, même si certaines incompréhensions persistent.)

  • Identify and describe different humorous styles
(e.g. Ce texte utilise surtout l’ironie pour critiquer la société, tandis que cet extrait repose davantage sur l’absurde.)

Please note that learning outcomes may vary depending on the general progress made by the students.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

  • follow routine spoken instructions (e.g. for a game, a recipe, using equipment, or installing computer software)
  • understand articles from the press or other authentic written sources and produce a written summary covering the main points

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Pierre Porcheron Tutor Website

Pierre studied towards a "Licence de Langue, Littérature et Civilisations anglo-saxonne" at Grenoble University in the early 1980s. He moved to Paris in 1986 where he worked in the field of Corporate and Financial Communication, first as an editor-in-chief for a specialised publishing company, and later as an executive in charge of Corporate and Financial Communication for a large national financial institution. In the early 1990s, he gave it all up and moved to the UK (an ambition since I was a teenager) and started teaching French in a private language school, then as a secondary school classroom teacher. He then went on to study and in 2010, he gained the Dip Trans IoLET (the Chartered Institute of Linguists Diploma in Translation). In 2013, he decided to resume his teaching career, albeit choosing to do so in the Life Long Learning sector. Pierre believes that learning and teaching a foreign language is (but not limited to) about having fun, expanding personal communication skills, seeing and understanding things from a different cultural perspective.
