Explore the connection between these related but different disciplines. This bird's eye view of how psychological theories underpin counselling practice will cover humanistic, cognitive behavioural and psychoanalytic approaches. What do psychologists think about the effectiveness of counselling?

What is the course about?

The purpose of this course is to look at how counselling and psychology relate to each other. Psychology is the scientific study of human mind, behaviour and emotion. Counselling is the application of skills and knowledge in a helping relationship.

What will we cover?

These workshop will give you a brief outline of the four main therapy models: Behavioural, Cognitive, Humanistic and Psychoanalytical.
Will explore the the nature ot love and human relationships.
Look at what Social Psychology tells us about the way people interact and self-disclose.
Look at what psychology tells us about human development from birth through to old age.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Describe 2 ways in which counselling and psychology are closely linked and how they inform each other.
Explain 1 or 2 ways counselling and psychology inform each other.
Identify 2 or 3 therapy models.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This workshop is open to anyone who has some knowledge of counselling or psychology at an introductory level.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Teaching will be by mini lectures with handouts, small group discussion, large group discussion, and individual and small group exercises.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Handouts will be given for all the theoretical input.
Some background reading is useful about counselling models such as Humanistic, Behavioural, Cognitive and Psychoanalytical. Any one of the following books will have useful background material. Borrow them from a library as they can be expensive:
Approaches to Psychology– 2013. by William E. Glassman & Marilyn Hadad. McGraw-Hill
The Handbook of Individual Therapy– 2013 by Windy Dryden. Sage
Why Love Matters: How affection shapes a baby's brain– 2014 by Sue Gerhardt Routledge.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

We offer counselling training from level 1(introduction) to level 4 (practitioner) and a range of psychology courses e.g.
