About

The Professional Acting Diploma is a full-time course running over 4-days-a-week. Our students receive rigorous actor training by professional acting practitioners and directors, costing about half the price of traditional drama schools and equips them with all the technical and creative skills they need to become working actors.

The first year of the Diploma course combines robust technical training with in-depth methodological grounding and qualification to Associate Diploma (accredited by Trinity College London).

In the second year, the focus shifts to performance and applying further technical skills and rehearsal methodologies to a range of performance projects, and also culminates in a Licentiate Diploma qualification (accredited by Trinity College London).

Diploma Programme Aims

  • To integrate body, voice and performance skills;
  • To equip students with the practical skills and knowledge to develop their creative potential;
  • To deepen students' understanding of the performance process by offering a focused and intense work environment where time is taken to address core issues / blocks in each individual performer's work;
  • To create an innovative dialogue between contemporary practice and existing methodologies in order for students to find their own route to problem solving and expression;
  • To empower and inspire students to initiate, generate and manage their own creative material;
  • To prepare students for the industry and maximise their employment prospects.

Teaching and Learning

Our Diploma programme runs from Monday to Thursday over three terms (32 contact hours per week), leaving three days a week for private study or work commitments. City Lit is open seven days, allowing you access to the library, café and rehearsal space. The learning structure is modular, and focuses on practice, collaboration, research, evaluation and feedback, including individual tutorials to monitor progress.

Technical skills are developed through regular technique classes focusing on voice, movement, acting, screen, radio, singing and stage fighting e.t.c.. In the second year, each group will act as a self-contained company, actively preparing students for working in the industry. Company work will include a final Agents showcase, a small-scale touring project, an 'in house' production of an extant text, development of a self-generated work, and producing a show-reel.

Throughout the programme there is a focus on technical study; individual expressivity; self and peer assessment; workshops for widening students' experience of performance practices and processes; multiple opportunities to perform a wide variety of material; and skills classes in professional development. Invited speakers and practitioners bring their expertise to the core training.
