  3. Basic skills for deaf people: getting started with English, Maths and Digital skills (pre-entry - Entry 1)

    This course is suitable if you have arrived in the UK from abroad and/or missed out on the education at school due to communication barriers. On this course, you will learn more vocabulary of English words and use them in reading and writing basic sentences. You will also will work with basic numbers, measures, shapes and use of data. It is a very practical course and the skills you learn can be applied to your every day life contexts. You will be introduced to zoom and google classroom basic functions. This course has no exams.

    This course will help you improve your communication skills including reading and writing. It will enable you to become confident in writing longer texts and reading more complex articles, information, descriptions and stories. You will also become more confident at formal and informal conversations. We will look at how English sentences are put together and how you can write more complex sentences confidently. We will see how formal English differs from informal English, which will help you with both your reading and writing. Along the way, you will work on your spelling strategies to improve the accuracy of your written work. And you will learn some useful digital skills including reading and finding information from websites.

We will focus on topics that interest you and use these to help you improve the key elements of reading and writing as well as communication skills to enable you to express your thoughts and feelings including in difficult situations. You will learn to how write whole sentences and paragraphs, use adjectives effectively, organise your writing, make notes and complete drafts, spell important common words, use punctuation correctly and develop reading and writing strategies most suited to you.     The aim of this course is to develop your reading skills in a friendly and supportive environment. During this course you will read various book stories chosen by the tutor. You will also be discussing your reading materials in BSL, learning new vocabulary and exploring the structure of English. Translating from English to BSL and summarising texts will be a large part of the sessions. This course has no exams.

    Do you need help with reading and writing English? Can you write the letters of the alphabet or do you need to practise? Do you need to improve your spelling? Can you use numbers and count up to 100 or do you need help? On this course we will help you with your English and maths. You will learn how to write individual letters, spell whole words, write simple sentences, read whole words, read simple sentences and understand notices. You will become confident in your speaking. And you will also practise the maths you need for everyday life so you can shop, use money and measure things correctly.

    Do you want to improve your communication skills and become a more confident speaker, listener, reader and writer of English? On this course, you will develop all your English language skills so you can act confidently in the most important everyday situations inside and outside work. You will become a skilled communicator when writing, using digital resources and in face-to-face interactions. You will develop your active listening skills so you can understand and empathise better. You will work on how to express yourself when speaking in different situations.
