With the current situation leaving most of us at home, now is the ideal time to learn a new skill. Whether it is learning a language that you’ve always wanted to learn or exploring relaxation techniques to aid your wellbeing, keeping your brain and body active during this time is essential.

City Lit is offering a number of brand new courses starting from February.

Many of our courses are delivered online. The learning experience is very similar to being in a classroom, meaning that you can learn from our friendly and passionate tutors who want to help you to achieve your goals.

  3. Film Noir to Neo Noir: the long hot summer

    Film noir first appeared in Hollywood in the early 1940s then vanished in the late 50's. Neo-noir was the 70's revival of film noir, updating the themes of political corruption and darkness at the top. Raymond Chandler’s Marlowe would not feel out of place in Chinatown or southern Florida’s 'Body Heat'. A dark and deadly dream of a nightmare vision for a post-Watergate America.

  8. Miriam Makeba in King Kong: the South African jazz musical

    Miriam Makeba, known as Mama Africa, is arguably the most famous African singer of the 20th century. Her international career took off when she was recruited to sing and act the female lead in the musical King Kong. Under the shadow of apartheid this inter-racial collaboration was a groundbreaking enterprise that had reverberations for decades to follow, in South Africa and globally, including in London, where it was performed in 1961.

Two decades of migration from the Caribbean “periphery” to the British “metropole” saw the development of deep varied Caribbean traditions both critical and creative, and this weekend course considers them.

  11. Masters of Cinema: Ennio Morricone: the movie maestro

    Composer of over 450 films, Ennio Morricone’s soundtracks combined electric guitars, panpipes, whistling and orchestrations with natural sound to reinvent the sound of cinema.   12. David Lynch on the lost highway to Hollywood

    In 1977 the film world changed with Eraserhead, the feature debut of David Lynch. His films are fascinating in their ability to create imaginary worlds that bear a superficial resemblance to reality, leading viewers through a labyrinth of twisted tales and unlikely small American towns. These landscapes are painted with shiny colours along a lost highway, illuminated by headlights racing into an endless night, where David Lynch movies echo earlier Hollywood classics.

  13. A Psychoanalytic investigation of the Joker

  15. Cinema du Look

    This course will focus on a specific decade of French film production – the 1980s. French cinema’s dynamic relationship with Hollywood finds expression in this decade in the so-called cinéma du look, exemplified by directors such as Luc Besson.
