We offer a wide range of piano, singing and instrumental workshops from complete beginners to advanced standard, daytime, evening or weekend. We also offer music production, music theory, history, singing and choirs, orchestra and jazz ensembles.
Choosing your course
Based in the heart of Covent Garden, we have a Yamaha CFIIIS and Steinway D concert grand pianos, Yamaha acoustic pianos and two suites of digital pianos. Music students have access to practice rooms for the duration of their course and we use the latest versions of Sibelius, Logic and Max/MSP for our music technology courses.

Expert tutors
Our classes are taught by professional performers and practitioners, many of whom also teach at leading London universities and music conservatoires. We also offer advanced piano masterclasses with visiting performers and professors each year. Please refer to individual course outlines for individual staff biographies.
Studying at City Lit
City Lit students have a proud history of learning an instrument or singing from scratch as well as studying more advanced courses such as music theory exams, and preparing for advanced piano diplomas. Many of our jazz students form ensembles together and we frequently organise concerts and recitals in and around Central London.

- Musicianship 1: listening and reading, pitch and rhythmLearn to name and recognise what you hear, to organise music notation, write it and read it. Music theory: grade 1Learn the basic principles of musical language and notation: rhythmic values, time signatures, pitch on treble and bass clefs, simple major scales, intervals and key signatures, and the most common musical terms and signs. City Lit's most advanced, regular classes are for advanced pianists, whether performers or specialist teachers. This course is designed to continue to develop your technique, broaden your repertoire and increase your understanding of piano playing to the highest level. This course is suitable for students working towards ABRSM LRSM and FRSM Diplomas.
Entry to this course is subject to audition with the Head of piano. If you are interested in joining this class, please apply using the pink button; someone will be in touch with you to arrange an audition.

For experienced classical guitar players, you will work on scales and arpeggios at grades 6, 7 & 8, and learn to play fingerstyle versions of Baroque, Latin/Spanish and contemporary music.

Start singing and explore your voice in this fun, confidence-building course. These classes will introduce you to healthy use of your singing voice and basic musicianship through a selection of songs from a variety of genres.

Develop your understanding of musical language by learning to read and write rhythm and melody in compound time, phrase structure and anacrusis (upbeat/pickup), transposing between clefs, major and minor keys up to four sharps/flats. (break week: 28 Oct 2026)

- Clarinet repertoire workshop
This course is for students who have a minimum of four years' experience on clarinet (playing at grade 5 standard or above), come and work on both technique and solo repertoire and enjoy some group playing. Offered every term.

Continue your singing journey and explore your voice in the second year of our training programme. These classes will further develop your singing voice and musicianship skills through a selection of technical exercises and songs from multiple genres. At this level the repertoire could be focused primarily on either classical OR contemporary songs at the tutors discretion. This third year of our classical piano programme begins with repertoire of approximately grade 1 standard and is suitable for students working towards ABRSM Grade 2. Improve your technique, fluency of reading and playing, and exploring more complex rhythm patterns and musical issues.

If you have completed Cello level 1 or have had at least one year’s tuition (playing at around grade 1 standard), come and explore cello technique and repertoire, including ensemble music. We welcome players who are returning to the cello after a break. Continues to Cello 2B next term.
